Below is a general guideline of our prenatal schedule, but the timing and frequency of some tests can differ depending on your needs.
What to expect
Early Pregnancy Assessment
- Blood test (beta-hCG) to confirm a positive pregnancy.
- First viability ultrasound (around 7 weeks of pregnancy) where the baby’s heartbeat can first be measured.
- Repeat viability ultrasound (around 9 weeks of pregnancy).
Non-invasive Prenatal Screening (10 weeks of pregnancy)
- NIPS is an optional, private-pay test which screens for Chromosomal Abnormalities and Microdeletions during the early stages of pregnancy. It can also detect the sex of your baby.
Enhanced First Trimester Screening (12 weeks of pregnancy)
- EFTS combines age with measurements from a nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound and a blood test to provide an estimate of the chance of a having a baby with common chromosomal abnormalities.
Routine visits
- Routine visits with your prenatal team consisting of an obstetrician and a prenatal nurse. If the pregnancy is progressing normally, these visits are 3-4 weeks apart to start. As the pregnancy continues, we’ll see you more and more frequently.
Anatomy Ultrasound
- Anatomy ultrasound where you can find out the gender of your baby.
Growth ultrasound (around 32 weeks of pregnancy)
- Growth ultrasound to monitor your baby’s size, progress, and overall health.
Referral
- Referral to the high-risk doctor at North York General Hospital to deliver your baby.
